With petrol and diesel car sales being phased out, more homeowners across Manchester are making the switch to electric vehicles. A home charger is the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your car topped up, and installation is simpler than most people think.
Types of home charger
Most home EV chargers are 7kW units, which will fully charge a typical electric car overnight. They are weatherproof, wall-mounted, and connect to your existing electrical supply. Smart chargers let you schedule charging for off-peak electricity rates, which can save you hundreds of pounds a year.
Do I need to upgrade my fuse board?
It depends on your current setup. A 7kW charger draws around 32 amps, which is significant. If your consumer unit is already near capacity, or if it is an older unit without RCD protection, you may need an upgrade as part of the installation. We assess this during our site survey.
Installation takes half a day
A standard installation takes around 3-4 hours. We mount the charger, run the cable from your consumer unit, install any necessary protection devices, and commission the unit. We also register the installation with OZEV and your local authority as required.
Costs
A typical home EV charger installation costs between 800 and 1,200 pounds depending on the charger model and the complexity of the cable run. This includes the charger unit, all materials, installation, and certification.
